Creative Surgery: A Double Bill

Art, Surgery and Transplantation: Professor Sir Roy Calne

Professor Sir Roy Calne, who performed Europe’s first liver transplant and the world’s first liver, lung and heart transplant and was nominated twice for a Nobel Prize, delivers his famous talk ‘Art, Surgery and Transplantation’. Calne, given art tuition by one of his patients, distinguished Scottish painter John Bellany, illustrates how the artistic process involved in creating portraits of patients and colleagues forges new relationships and a deeper understanding of the person at a particularly vulnerable moment in their life. He describes transplanation as not just a dramatic operation but a serious attempt to restore a doomed person back to a normal life for a long period of time; art provides a tool to both convey the impact of such surgery on the individual and increase public understanding of the process.

The Impact of the Saving Faces Project on Patients, the Artist and the Public: Professor Iain Hutchison

Professor Iain Hutchison, eminent consultatnt maxillofacial surgeon, and founder of the Facial Surgery Research charity Saving Faces gives a poignant insight into the effects of his collaboration with BP Portrait Award winning artist Mark Gilbert to create thought-provoking portraits of patients before, during and after facial surgery.

Included in the ticket price is an invitation to drinks, music and a late viewing of Professor Sir Roy Calne and Mark Gilbert’s artwork at The Art of Medicine exhibition at The Art House Gallery, across the road from the venue. There will also be an auction of three signed Professor Sir Roy Calne prints to raise money for The Paediatric Research Fund.
